Advantages & Disadvantages of Laptops over Desktops

In this modern world, laptops have immense impact on consumer. Laptops have replaced desktops/ PC to great extent. But still laptops have not taken place of desktops fully. The reason behind this gap is the advantages and disadvantages of laptops in comparison to desktops. Below is mentioned, some of the major advantages and disadvantages of laptops over desktops.
Advantages of Laptops
·         Portability:- Portability is usually the first feature of comparison of laptops versus desktops. Portability means that laptops can be easily taken and used at many places. It is not fixed at one place for usage like desktops. This feature results in productivity.
One can do any pending work wherever with laptop, which is not possible with desktop as it is fixed at one place. Carrying a laptop means having instant access to various information, personal or work files.
·         Size: - Laptops are smaller than desktops. This is beneficial when space is less like in small houses or offices. When not in use, laptop can be closed and put away.
·         Low power consumption: - Laptops are several times more power efficient than desktops. A typical laptop consumes 20–90 W compared to 100-800 W for desktop. This feature is particularly beneficial for businesses, which run hundreds of personal computer and homes for potential power saving.
·         Quiet: - Laptops are often quieter than desktops. Laptops lead to less heat production. Therefore, fewer and slower cooling fans are used which produces less noise in comparison to desktops.
·         Battery: - A fully charged laptop can continue to be used in case of power outage. It is not affected by short power interruptions and blackouts.  A desktop needs a UPS to handle short interruptions and blackouts. To achieve on– battery time of more than 20- 30 minutes, desktops requires large and expensive UPS.
·         All-in-one: - Laptops are designed to be portable, have everything integrated in to the chassis. For desktops, it is divided into desktop display, keyboard, mouse and optional peripherals such as speakers.
Disadvantages of Laptops
Though laptops have many advantages over desktops, still they are far behind from desktops because of their disadvantages. Some major disadvantages of laptops are as follows:-
·         Performance: - Performance of mainstream desktops and laptops is comparable and laptops remain more expensive than desktops at the same or even lower performance level. The upper limits of laptops remain much lower than the highest-end desktops. Most higher-end laptops are sufficiently powerful for high resolution movies, 3D gaming, video editing etc. However, laptop processors can be disadvantaged when dealing with higher-end database.
·         Upgradability: - Upgradability of laptops is very limited compared to desktops. The reasons for limited upgradability of laptops are both technical and economic. There is no industry- wide standard form factor of laptops. The result of different design and construction of laptops, is difficulty in their upgradation and high repair cost. Some upgrades can be performed by adding external devices but these upgrades usually impair the laptop’s portability as they often have to be disconnected and reconnected when the laptop is on the move.
·         Durability: - Due to portability, laptops are subject to more physical damage than desktops. Components like screen hinges, latches, power jacks etc deteriorate gradually due to ordinary use.
Security and Privacy: - Being valuable, common and portable, laptops are more targets of theft. The cost of stolen data (business/ personal) and of the resulting problems can be many times the value of the stolen laptop. Therefore, both physical protection of laptops and safeguarding of data contained on them are of highest importance.
